Zahra Van Nguyen is a London-based choreographer and movement artist
specialising in somatic and improvisational techniques. A graduate of Rambert
she follows a strong foundation in classical ballet, training with ENB, Central
School of Ballet, Conditions Studio programme and then performing at ICA,
London Performance Studios, Ormside Projects, Turner Contemporary and
more. Her performances merge storytelling through anatomy and pop culture
references, reimagining the communicative boundaries of movement through
experimental, durational work that explores the body as a site of memory,
resistance, and transformation. Featured in Dazed 100, her work challenges
traditional dance boundaries, prioritising embodied feeling over clean
technique while maintaining an intimate, politically charged, and spiritually
raw voice.
Zahra also works as a movement director collaborating across music, fashion,
and editorial with artists like Zukovstheworld, Bass Victim, Tohji and
Varg2™M, contributing to visual campaigns for Shayne Oliver Group, Nike,
Issey Miyake and more.
BODY SONGS: LYRICISM AND DRAMATIC STRUCTURES IN SOMATICS
This workshop aims to explore and dissect the nature of movement as a self narrative tool and examine how adjacent it is in relation to dialogue, text, imagery and sound. We will practice improvisational techniques to explore how movement can be used as a narrative tool in different layers, not miming but embodying feelings, textures and atmospheres. We will practice composing images but through a somatic
lens. The structure of internal narrative, tone, focus, rhythm and texture are some of the many layers that we can explore through moving. We will experiment with text and score and the absence of it to enable us to play with building images and scenes in different ways using a range of exercises.
This workshop is part of a series curated by the artist Mica Georgis as part of a Residency at The Writers’ Room, Florence Trust in April 2026.
The workshops are open to dancers and non-dancers. No previous dance experience is necessary.
N.B The venue is not accessible, the studio is up two flights of stairs.
