Julie Rose Bower / The Silica Pulse / Simon Whetham
念 · RE:CITE brings together artists whose practices move between performance, sound and research, asking how listening is shaped by the technologies, bodies, histories and power structures around us.
For the first edition of 念 · RE:CITE, artist-researcher Julie Rose Bower shares her research into ASMR and feminist listening, before performing with her ambient and ASMR-oriented band The Silica Pulse. The evening will also see a live performance of ‘Channelling Shortwave’ by Simon Whetham, bringing together different approaches to intimacy and sound through an orchestra of motors salvaged from discarded electronic devices.
An evening moving between research, listening and live performance, with food and conversation in between at the cosy art cafe ETSDTS.

念 · RE:CITE is a new event series co-curated by Zhuo Mengting and angela wai nok hui. Embodying a Chinese character that can suggest thought, feeling, attention, reading and mind power, 念 · RE:CITE sees research and artistic practice likewise as interconnected ways of thinking and making.
The series in 2026 autumn will feature three artist-researchers: Julie Rose Bower (October), Jonathan Higgins (November) and Annie Goh (December), alongside guest artists and musicians to be in dialogue.
Mengting Zhuo is supported by the Early Career Promoter Fund which is managed by PRS Foundation and funded by Arts Council England using Supporting Grassroots Music funding from DCMS.

About the Artists
>> Julie Rose Bower
As a sound artist, designer and researcher working with Foley sound effects and ASMR performance, Bower gathers a distinctive palette of up-close found sounds in artworks that centre the body, feelings and sensations. Her practice focuses on reproducing and amplifying sensory experiences at a first-person to forensic scale in aural close-ups that miniaturise attention while penetrating bodies, objects and spaces in motion.
Julie Rose’s artworks use sound to promote heightened intimacy, tactility and intersubjectivity. These works stage sonic interactions as strangely satisfying connections between audience and performance producing pleasurable qualities of texture, heft and ergonomic sensibility. Her work takes place across theatre, dance, gallery, site-specific and online spaces and often involves creating custom libraries of sound effects.
Having recently completed her PhD Doctor Bower has been exploring ASMR as a form of concrete poetry and also plays music with The Silica Pulse, a live ambient ASMR group. She regularly speaks and teaches about multisensory and inclusive sound practice in talks, panel discussions and masterclasses and recently spoke in a BBC Radio 3 special feature on ‘The Sound of Whispers.’

Performing live ambient ASMR music, T§P are a group who play with nested listening processes by moving between recorded and live versions of sounds. The Silica Pulse are Foley and ASMR artist Julie Rose Bower, noise musician Rob Hart and sound composer and therapist Sound Mirror. Tonight’s Springg Reverbbb performance is an edition of a recurring installation exploring the sonic life of coiled springs as a form of potential energy. Using spring mattress and objects, pedals, synths and loops to produce ambient experiences through sound and synthesis, here reverb is explored as a time-stretch aesthetic. By invoking the spirit of a classic 1960s spring reverb unit – reverberation is staged as a reliable, repeated ephemeral sonic chamber that keeps changing shape as the performers interact with it in different ways; brushing, tapping, walking, sitting and so on. Using custom impulse responses made with this large bed-shaped object, audiences learn to anticipate these emergent sonic forms which, akin to the suspension of a yawn, prepare a move toward the quiet of an unconventional rest.

Since 2005 Simon Whetham has developed a practice of working with sonic activity, often utilising environmental sound, employing a variety of methods and techniques to obtain unnoticed, obscured sonic phenomena.
His artistic investigations have led him to work increasingly in multi-disciplinary projects, especially since focusing on repurposing obsolete technology from 2018. Considering his ideas and approach, a theme has emerged of revaluing what is deemed worthless.
He performs and exhibits internationally, participating in Koganecho Bazaar (JP); Audioblast (FR); Cappadocia Biennal (TK); You and Me Festival (CN); Chiba City Art Triennale (JP); Intermediale (PL); WIP Festival (CY); Sofia Underground (BG); Simultan (RO); WeSA Festival (KR); Sonica (SI); Fresh Winds Biennale (IS); Nakanojo Biennale (JP); Blurred Edges (DE); Tsonami Festival (CL); Moers Festival (DE) and Madeiradig (PT).
